VI. Procedures

A. Introduction and Motivation

1. A multi-media PowerPoint presentation will be provided for each student, starting them on a Web Quest.

2. Quizlet will review the basics of equation solving and translating words into math symbols
3. Although students complain that they will "never use this stuff [algebra]," word problems show how algebra is used every day.

B. Lesson Body

1. The lesson on word problem follows lessons on basic number operations and basic equation solving.
2. With each type of problem, students will be asked, "Where would this be used? Who would need to know this? Where might you use algebra?" Students should create their own word problems, based on their own experiences.
3. By connecting students to web resources, they will become more autonomous learners, able to review as required and able to generalize these web skills to other subjects.

C. Lesson Closure

1. Student presentations, where the students teach the skills needed to solve a specific type of word problem, will culminate the word problem learning activity. Students will discuss what was helpful and what remains unclear, and thus further analyze their own attitudes and roadblocks regarding math.
2. A short assessment will be given prior to their final, to help students (and teacher) know objectively where the gaps remain.
3.No homework beyond what is prescribed in the Web Quest
